A new website for a new Intype

posted by Ivan Čentéš in Miscellaneous | March 30th, 2009 |

While Martin and Juraj are moving Intype closer and closer to a release state, the work on the new Intype web is also moving on.

So what’s new with the web? Well, almost everything. The website will get a brand new, fresh redesign, a new structure as well as a complete new backend system, written from scratch in Ruby on Rails.

New structure

The structure of the website will change a bit, to better fit the need for information for a new user, as well as for the daily user of Intype:

  • Homepage - a compilation of all the important stuff going on
  • Blog
  • Screencasts - after the 0.3.5 release there will be more and more of the magic moving pictures of Intype features
  • Releases - perhaps the most important section. This will be the place for all stable and unstable releases and their release notes.
  • Manual - here you will find a complete documentation of Intype and its features. This is where you send your friends asking about how things work in Intype and say “RTFM” :)
  • Community - a light alternative to current Intype forums. This is the area where the community will meet, share ideas, feature requests or report bugs
  • About - the team, history, the filosophy of Intype and stuff like that

New looks

A few pictures are more than a thousand words, so here’s how the whole thing will look like.

Note that these images are not tuned to perfection yet (text constrast, font sizes, etc.) and are being constantly improved in monthly iterations as the site is being build up (I hate Martin for this).

Oehh! I like it! Much clearer! I hope the community will be a bit better structured than the current forums. Tbh.. those suck..

Will u be implementing the new design together with 0.35?

  • 2 Roxy | 31.03.2009 at 1:11 am

Nice, but I think it’s an useless waste of time. The current site is good already ;)

  • 3 Anonymous coward | 31.03.2009 at 2:20 am

    Good job Ivan!

  • 4 Anonymous coward | 31.03.2009 at 3:28 am

Intype is shamefully late and you take the time to redesign the website? Geez!

  • 5 sagun | 31.03.2009 at 4:06 am

Good job Ivan Čentéš!!! Very nice web design. I like the minimalistic approach.

    Once again, well done.

  • 6 Joan Piedra | 31.03.2009 at 5:13 am

It’s looking good, can’t wait to test the new release. Good luck guys.

    All the best,
    Joan.

  • 7 baael | 31.03.2009 at 9:18 am

    lookin good :)

Deadulus I really like this forum, simple and fast, what more we need? ;)

  • 8 smmurf | 31.03.2009 at 11:06 am

That looks very good, but I’m waiting for new release much more than for new website, this site is pretty good!

  • 9 Not that important | 31.03.2009 at 11:38 am

Sorry but this is not what InType is missing.
Hello? You don’t have even an alpha release since more than a year and you care about “site cosmetics”?
The actual theme is already clean and nice enough (more than the most websites out there). What you don’t have is “what to download” from the shiny site my friend, ant that won’t change soon I susspect.

  • 10 Martin Cohen | 31.03.2009 at 2:09 pm

Ok, guys. Calm down. I know that being ignorant and just come and whine around is much easier than to read the sidebar on the homepage.

So to make it easier for you: there are three people in this team — me, Juraj and Ivan. Me and Juraj are responsible for the application, while Ivan is completely dedicated for the website. It’s true that I’m responsible for the design of both, but the website has it’s dedicated time (approx. 2-3 days in a month to reiterate what has been done and what Ivan needs to be designed) and is in no way affecting the main application.

The schedule to release the site is now set to “between 0.3.5 and 0.5″, so there definitely will be “what to download”.

Problem of this website is that is has been built on top of various third-party applications (WordPress, Vanilla) and there’s no space for documentations, no download section, no place to centralize community. So we learned what needs to be done and started building the new site. We’re very slowly working on it for more than a year (to not affect my time required for main application). And the point was to inform you about how we progress and what to be expected in near future.

  • 11 Bryce | 31.03.2009 at 2:50 pm

Cheers to you guys for identifying the need for this. Very well-done.

  • 12 Brendon Kozlowski | 31.03.2009 at 4:00 pm

Wow, I apologize to the Intype team for those who have made poor comments. I guess the only thing to say is that it’s such a testament to followers of your product that they’re getting just SO eager they’re becoming a bit rude in their impatience.

The new site design looks crisp and very clean. I don’t know, it looks like it might be missing something (design-wise) that I can’t just put my finger on in the content pages. In comparison to the main (home) page, the sub-content pages just look a little bland. I think the more contrasting colors of black/blue/green on the main page give it some more depth as opposed to the lighter colors on the content pages. (Not trying to complain, just offer an outsider’s view, I trust the Intype team on design decisions whole-heartedly and I know you’re not yet done.)

@Martin: Still waiting on that discussion of your CSS framework. ;)

On the website screencasts: Since screencasts have become a more integral part of the homepage’s content, will there eventually be a way for Intype users to submit their own screencasts/videos? It may aid in keeping content more fresh. I see you have a Twitter notice on the main page too.

On the “lighter forum”: Is it an in-house RoR built forum, or a different 3rd party product? …or an integration of both?

Any reason why you chose RoR over CakePHP? I recall Martin’s worked on both now, perhaps Ivan hasn’t? I’m only curious, RoR is much more developed and has more features but I’m still a PHP fan. ;)

Overall, I’m anxious to see the next incarnation of the website.

  • 13 Chrish | 31.03.2009 at 5:41 pm

The layout looks pretty nice! Good job Ivan!

  • 14 Martin Cohen | 31.03.2009 at 5:46 pm

Brendon Kozlowski: Thank you Brendon for you bright and constructive input. To the point:

All colors need the contrast in there. I will work more on the Homepage, because it needs a wow effect, so I totally agree.

The CSS framework was actually a grid system for laying out stuff when I’m designing (not coding). So basically it is a little script that generates guidelines plus rules on how to use the grid.

On the screencasts. Well, we were thinking about allowing all users to post screencasts and we decided that we don’t want to be/manage a screencasting server. The point of screencasts there is to cover the most of the manual (the basic stuff, that’s better to see than to read). Of course, we will be open to any input, but we want to keep the library consistent in terms of quality, content and form.

Everything on this new site is in-house stuff. We have some ideas for the future that require to have a full control over the source code.

RoR has been chosen because we have more experience with it. I myself love Ruby, though in my daily job I work with PHP. And if we were with PHP, I would go for Nette.

  • 15 dan_delaney | 31.03.2009 at 7:19 pm

Personally, I like the design and hope that the new site will enhance Intype. The only thing I don’t see on the site are any RSS feed buttons (or maybe I’m blind!) - as a user who subscribes to the intype feeds i find them incredibly useful and would hate for them to disappear!

Regarding screencasts, I was planning to make a series of screencasts using Intype and my CodeIgniter snippets. I don’t suppose there’d be any issue with this, as long as its hosted elsewhere?

  • 16 Deadelus | 31.03.2009 at 8:40 pm

I can’t agree more that a well designed website is very important for having a good community.

Btw checked out that ‘Nette’. That’s a good example of a terrible website. Sure it looks ok, but the constant switch between Chech and English makes me mad!

Design and build in english, then add other languages please ;-)

  • 17 Ivan Čentéš | 31.03.2009 at 9:28 pm

Brendon Kozlowski Well, Martin said everything I wanted to say :) Anyway, I worked both with RoR and CakePHP, but I just don’t like PHP, so RoR was the prefered choice.

  • 18 Shyam Balu | 31.03.2009 at 11:08 pm

The new design is taking a step back from the current one. Too bland.

  • 19 Ali B. | 31.03.2009 at 11:46 pm

The design looks great and very easy on the eye. A job very well done Ivan.
I, as a person who uses nothing *but* InType now, am very satisfied with the direction everything is going toward. I think this going to be the best Windows editor out there. Wait, it is the best already.
    Oh, and RoR FTW!! :)

  • 20 Ivan Čentéš | 01.04.2009 at 12:09 am

Ali B. Well thanks a lot. But Martin did the designs. I just tried to “guide” him, to be sure I have an easy time getting the design into HTML :)

  • 21 Jeroen Mulder | 01.04.2009 at 10:01 am

All around it should be a nice first release to get ready for growth. Especially the navigation area is a good improvement.

However, may I suggest you to reconsider the homepage? While the current one makes some awkward choices on priorities, I truly think it did one thing very well: it draws a visitor’s focus to a visually pleasing explanation and call-to-action for the product.

This seems to lack in the new design. As cliché as a screenshot of the software is, it always does a good job of giving a first impression and communicating what it is. For me personally, the screenshot on the current homepage was what convinced me to download Intype. Especially when Intype wants to position itself as a powerful yet fast (lack of clutter in the interface is most often associated with fast) piece of software, I truly think emphasizing the ‘what’ in a screenshot is a good idea. Followed up by screencasts that show the ‘how’.

The position of the call-to-action (Download) could be better as well, I think. Right now it is too close to the navigation and risks to be dismissed as non-content (thus non-important). It is also on the far right, being outside of a visitor’s scanning (F shape) and reading pattern (top to bottom).

Again, I really think the current one does a better job, even though it does not yet emphasize some of the key differentiators for Intype (powerful, light-weight, free until 1.0?).

Other sites I think do a tremendous job in this area are:

And the website of Nette does a decent job too, I’d think.

Nonetheless, keep up the great work. Switched to Intype about a month ago and I don’t use anything else nowadays. Evangelizing the software to coworkers and friends too :-)

  • 22 Ali B. | 01.04.2009 at 9:00 pm

@Ivan Hah! Yeah well, brilliant C++ programmers do need guidance in webdesign. Otherwise, you’ll be ending up writing some multi-thread HTML! :D
Let me just concur again that I think that choosing Ruby on Rails as the basis for the new website is a great step.

  • 23 awake | 01.04.2009 at 9:49 pm

Where can one submit feature requests?

This editor rocks… put a price on it or a donate sign. There are still some features that I’ll love to see on it (like everyone else I guess)

  • 24 Oscart™ | 01.04.2009 at 10:45 pm

Awesome! very nice layout. Sorry if I’m outdated from the forums but I wonder if there would be any unestable release before the the 0.3.5 release.

  • 25 April Joke. | 01.04.2009 at 11:22 pm

I guess the best April joke is that InType is will be released soon :D.

  • 26 Ivan Čentéš | 02.04.2009 at 12:03 am

awake There is a Feature requests category in Intype forums.

Ali B. My last comment was meant as a joke, Martin is a very good webdeveloper as well, he doesn’t need guidance. But he focuses mainly on the development of Intype (and design for relaxing) and I’m responsible for the web.

  • 27 Martin Cohen | 02.04.2009 at 8:45 am

Jeroen Mulder: Thanks for a great comment with a lot of inspiring points. As Ivan pointed out in the post. The design is not finished and we took time yesterday and came with many ideas to make it better, and we came out with similar conclusions.

  • 28 Jeroen Mulder | 02.04.2009 at 9:26 am

@Martin, no problem. Just sharing my opinion, which is always a bit of a guess work when you’re not involved in the entire design process. :-)

Really rooting for you guys. Love the software and the direction it is going.

  • 29 dan_delaney | 02.04.2009 at 11:34 am

Just to concur with Jereon, one of the reasons why I downloaded intype in the first place was the part-screenshot on the homepage. I liked the look of the interface first, before looking at some of the screencasts.

Still, I think its best to get the new website design up and working and then if needs be tweak it later.

Oh.. and just for the record, I hate RoR - its the love child of the devil ;)

  • 30 Ali B. | 03.04.2009 at 11:29 am

@Ivan: Hey, mine was a joke too :)

  • 31 baael | 03.04.2009 at 12:21 pm

“Oh.. and just for the record, I hate RoR - its the love child of the devil ;) ”

    that’s why I love it :P

  • 32 E-User | 03.04.2009 at 9:45 pm

e-texteditor author just released the sources on github:
    http://github.com/etexteditor/e/tree/master
It might be interesting for you to take a look and see how the various things were implemented.

  • 33 Shyam Balu | 05.04.2009 at 2:53 am

@E-user Please god no! E is a pile of crap, I mean using a unix environment on windows for a text editor …. comeon!

  • 34 Deadelus | 06.04.2009 at 9:25 am

Have to agree with Shyam here, that’s one of the reasons I don’t use E. But I doubt the way it has been coded is really that dependant on the way it uses the operating system.

  • 35 Joe - I for one can learn | 06.04.2009 at 11:19 am

    @shyam & @deadelus
It’s not everything black or white, and an editor like E has many parts.

I always like to see how others solved (compared to me) the various problems, cause I always can learn something - even if as a whole, my solution was better (since it consists of many small parts - not all parts are better - so others might have there better ideas/solutions).

  • 36 Ingwar | 06.04.2009 at 6:52 pm

Well, whatever you think of E, open source is good and the developer’s decision is to be applauded.

  • 37 Nikolay Kolev | 06.04.2009 at 10:48 pm

I like Intype a lot, but you know that open-source projects are hard to compete with. 2 developers versus tens, hundreds - it’s impossible to beat. So, I’m sure E will re-implement many of Intype features, add many new… who knows, but don’t underestimate E as it’s something totally different now. I didn’t like what it was before. There’s another open-source player - http://www.redcareditor.com/ which uses TextMate bundles.

  • 38 Lazy coward | 09.04.2009 at 10:20 am

Release nightly. I can’t wait. Or tell the date. Be a human

  • 39 awake | 10.04.2009 at 7:18 pm

I know theres talk about Intype not trying to be like other editors but the truth is I think people compare intype with e-texteditor.

That being said, ‘e’ had decided to make some major moves like going open source (well kind of, they are realeasing their code), and also having a *nix version.

If intype is goign to continue to be just a hobbyist type project then continue the route you are going, but if you plan to be able to put food on the table with your editor, this hobbyist type attitude needs to stop.

  • 40 Przemyslaw Bajno | 11.04.2009 at 2:26 pm

@awake: Exactly, with considering it hobbyist project it doesn’t come exactly with real money. Either you need to thinking about it seriously or make it open source.

  • 41 Anonymous coward | 11.04.2009 at 7:04 pm

oh, jeez. here come the freetards.

  • 42 awake | 11.04.2009 at 9:40 pm

I luv the editor soo much, I just wanna buy it.

It pisses me off sometimes when it looks like things are stalled sometimes (thats when I go off ranting).

  • 43 Przemyslaw Bajno | 12.04.2009 at 8:33 pm

@Anonymous coward: You got me wrong. I’m willing to pay for this app, but if team could get this shit together. From this point going on i don’t see it happening. What’s more I would like lower price available for me poor student. If you people think of making it seriously get serious people and make them do their job. This project is frozen. And i see no nightly.

  • 44 Ingwar | 13.04.2009 at 11:26 pm

@Przemyslaw Bajno: Shhh, if you’re trying to get the app for a lower price, you may want to avoid insulting the makers and perhaps be a tiny little bit less whiny too. Just sayin’.

  • 45 Anonymous coward | 14.04.2009 at 12:06 am

Ingwar, but there is no app, nothing to discuss for more than a year.

  • 46 baael | 14.04.2009 at 11:52 am

I agree in some parts, to lower negative social mood ;) Intype team should release nightly, or show something, more than once a month. It is more than year - actually soon be 2 or 3 - when I’am awaiting Intype and loosing my hope for this project. We are Your potencial customers - dont give us reasons to walk away, plz :(

  • 47 mvm | 14.04.2009 at 11:56 am

@Anonymous Coward: Exactly! Nothing to discuss except plans, but it’s getting boring. Good method of looking to this site is through rss of releases. And it’s silent for a year. It’s obvious that martin doesn’t plan to make living from this editor, and things like this will continue for years. Don’t waste time here.

  • 48 Przemyslaw Bajno | 14.04.2009 at 2:24 pm

I’m not insulting programmers of this lovely app, am I? i’m just tryin’ to make them work more efficiently. It can’t be money-making project unless start to think about it seriously. Hobby and money preclude each other.

  • 49 Ingwar | 14.04.2009 at 7:02 pm

@Anonymous coward: I can’t (and don’t want to) argue about that, since I am too frustrated with the long waiting time. But since the project apparently isn’t dead (yet?) and we get info on the progress from the dev team, it would be nice if we kept the discussion civilized and drama free.

@baael: Lucky you. Some of us are coping with this since the old site on Blogger. There was a time when all we had was a bunch of plans written down in a blog post and a screencast, but no application to download and this situation lasted for quite a few months. Things have improved since then. ;)

@Przemyslaw Bajno: Well, you do sound insulting. Other than that, yeah… The project doesn’t do much to reinforce one’s faith in it.

  • 50 Anonymous coward | 15.04.2009 at 5:50 pm

    Come Onnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • 51 awake | 20.04.2009 at 8:28 pm

Just FYI for those who don’t know this.

You can get the the latest unstable build (as of the date on this comment of course) from URL below

    http://intype.info/download/download.php?intype-0.3.1.734.exe

It has the beta project sidebar e.t.c.

  • 52 baael | 20.04.2009 at 8:59 pm

    “Come Onnnnnnnnnnnnnn”
    +1

  • 53 Anonymous coward | 21.04.2009 at 3:59 am

nothing happens on the windows front for a long time (sublime,e,intype). such a shame.

  • 54 awake | 21.04.2009 at 6:39 pm

‘e’ looks like it’s about to pick up speed with them looking to take some type of open source approach, I just can’t stand that it depends on cygwin.

’sublime text’ I’m about to try right now. I’ve never heard about them. TY anonymous coward :-)

  • 55 awake | 21.04.2009 at 6:45 pm

Just got done using ‘revo uninstaller’ to completely wipe out ’sublime text’ from my PC.

Different strokes for different folks, but i’ll just have to place my hopes on intype getting better.

  • 56 Anonymous coward | 22.04.2009 at 12:48 pm

The whole thing is so sad…

Nothing happened for over one year…

  • 57 Ingwar | 22.04.2009 at 2:11 pm

I just want to point out that if nothing has happened during that time, you wouldn’t have a blog post to comment on.

  • 58 seb | 22.04.2009 at 8:00 pm

When are you planning to release it ?, is there a date set ? I can’t wait !!!!

  • 59 Anonymous coward | 22.04.2009 at 8:16 pm

    It’s okay Ingwar. *lol*

  • 60 awake | 22.04.2009 at 11:27 pm

I can understand why “Intype” does not want to go open source, but at the same time their reason is not solid enough.

You can always find a set of people interested in solidifying a certain portion of the editor which can free you up to concentrate on the areas you like.

e.g. if you hate “drag-n-drop” or are having a hard time with it, release this code to the world and watch/observe what happens at least.

    I’m done ranting…

  • 61 Oscart™ | 23.04.2009 at 5:26 pm

I dream with the day that Intype team shut out all our mouths.
    So far, it’s just a dream…

  • 62 ezsky | 23.04.2009 at 6:19 pm

    good work!

  • 63 Mick | 24.04.2009 at 9:36 am

I’m a bit of a text editor junkie and have tried both ‘E’ and Sublime Text, but Intype feels just that little slicker and faster.

I run a number of apps from my USB drive - what would be really cool is if I could run a portable Intype - which you can do with Sublime - so I can take my fave editor everywhere with me

  • 64 baael | 24.04.2009 at 10:33 am

“portable Intype” - no problem with it. Copy Intype dir and You have it.

  • 65 Crank | 24.04.2009 at 12:14 pm

    pspad

  • 66 Martin Cohen | 24.04.2009 at 2:01 pm

baael: Thanks, you were faster than me :)

  • 67 Mick | 24.04.2009 at 6:23 pm

    @Baael: Nice one!!!!!
All I need now is the shiny new version of Intype (please) :-)

  • 68 baael | 24.04.2009 at 6:58 pm

*Martin:* It’s pleasure to be usefull sometimes :)

  • 69 Przemyslaw | 25.04.2009 at 9:35 pm

Yo Guys i suggest you guys just take it easy, they’ll release this when they’ll release this. I also suggest you Intype fans to try Aptana, it’s cool IDE to give it a try.

  • 70 baael | 26.04.2009 at 1:03 am

there are many reasons why I hate IDE’s… this is personal, but I need texteditor only instead of texteditor + 1001 questionable features, which are in many cases binded to versions of languages and often very problematic.
simplicity + power + independence FTW. I dream about containers in windows, when it will be possible to create custom panels/windows with many applications, like: intype + ff + console or intype + mysql admin + ie, etc. Somebody know if such thing exists?

  • 71 Przemyslaw | 26.04.2009 at 3:48 pm

I prefer Texteditor to any IDE. I totally agree with baael. Some console would be good, but not great. It will be like making texteditor in IDE way. You have console in Windows, let’s have texteditor texteditor like. InType + FF + Console (optionally phpMyadmin) and that’s all you’ll need. But Aptana is good, comparing to others. Aptana take 150mb RAM while Intype 16mb due to its lack of funcionability :P

  • 72 baael | 26.04.2009 at 5:48 pm

i’m working on such container, it could be iCMD2 :P but can’t start until may.

  • 73 Przemyslaw | 27.04.2009 at 4:01 pm

Sometimes i’m dreaming about open source, it’s community, it’s idea and it’s faster development :>

  • 74 Przemyslaw | 27.04.2009 at 6:54 pm

This project is moving slowly towards the goals you’ve appointed years ago. Last version was released GOD 28 Feb 2008, you are srsly kiddin’ me. I just can recall the days i could meet new intype versions within weeks, Now it’s years and everybody is beggin’ ya to make it. Yeah, if i could code in c++ as well as you guys, i’ll be happy to join your team, but from this point on i can only make you some console-kick-ass-calculator :P

  • 75 baael | 28.04.2009 at 5:33 pm

  • 76 Robin drost | 02.05.2009 at 2:24 am

I love the new design. But more important is a new release of Intype! ;)

  • 77 Przemyslaw Bajno | 02.05.2009 at 5:20 pm

Get your work together and show us your results or if it’s not exactly ready get some energy drink drink it and work. Work work work.

  • 78 Ingwar | 02.05.2009 at 8:12 pm

@Przemyslaw Bajno: Why don’t you take your own advice and get a job, so you can afford Intype’s license once it comes out?

  • 79 Joe - No | 03.05.2009 at 2:42 pm

@Ingwar: what if the situation of most of us is different? All of us can afford a license, but wait since years to be able to buy it :). Since more than a year we don’t get even an lousy nightly or alpha release -> if this is not vaporware than I don’t know what it is :(.

  • 80 Ingwar | 03.05.2009 at 5:46 pm

@Joe-No: I don’t argue about Intype being terribly late. I just don’t like Przemyslaw’s attitude. It stinks.

  • 81 Przemyslaw Bajno | 03.05.2009 at 9:20 pm

@Ingwar: It’s REALITY! I could afford this app, i would even pay for it but i’m asking for being more effective in work this team is doin’. You just suck

  • 82 Ingwar | 04.05.2009 at 12:38 am

@Przemyslaw Bajno: You seem to contradict your own words, since you were asking for a discount for a poor student not that long ago.

Look, I know it’s all fun to be obnoxiously demanding, but this is only going to annoy people while not speeding up anything. Writing quality software requires time and there’s not much you can do about it, no matter how rude your comments will be.

And it’s not like you don’t have a choice. If you’re really that desperate to have TextMate’s clone, write your own (I’m not being sarcastic). You don’t even have to start from scratch, since E, which is supposedly *the* Windows’ TM alternative, is open source. If, however, this is beyond your skill level, you can always purchase a Mac and have the original TextMate at your disposal.

  • 83 Przemyslaw Bajno | 04.05.2009 at 2:07 pm

    @Ingwar: I’m not feeding ya

I’m just trying to motivate someone here… What i said about price was just loud thinking, and you shouldn’t have gotten it so personally. I’m just thinking of possibilities.

  • 84 Sad Bear | 06.05.2009 at 12:38 pm

No new website will ever help if there’s nothing to download or buy :(.
The actual L&F of the site is way better than the average, so the “optimization” here does not bring much.

Ok, this blog post is starting to get out of control, we need a new blog post *hint*

    Virtual vapourware…… ? :-)

  • 89 Simon | 07.05.2009 at 5:32 pm

Why don’t you sell the beta program for a small fee and let users upgrade to the final product? I’m currently using your “latest” alpha (0.3.1.743) and it totally works for me. I’ve worked with more buggy tools that i bought “stable”.

You guys craft a great product! So do us a favor and don’t get caught in feature creep.

There are people out there that are willing to pay for your ALPHA product(!)
    So, hope dies last :)

I’m looking forward to seeing your product - hopefully soon!

    Regards, Simon

  • 93 Liking It | 08.05.2009 at 8:48 pm

I love the simplicity. I hope the new versions when they come out adhere and keep to that principle.

If you look at the file structure layout of “\Program Files\Intype” you will see that everything is very cleanly laid out and there isn’t a bunch of random garbage strewn about.

And if I do a search for “intype” in regedit I simply find associating the .itProject file type, stuff for right-click context and start menu links. All basic stuff and no configuration information (so yeah, copy the Intype root dir to your USB and go!)

Anyway, awesome program that makes programming more fun because of its clean and elegant interface and simplicity.

Keep up the good work!! I can’t wait to see what the next version looks like with the new “widget/layout” (or whatever you call it??) framework. I’m hoping it is still clean and “unbusy”.

    Eric

P.S. if you are looking for a really cool text editor for writing prose, check out Q10 text editor. It is freeware and adheres to same principals as above. Unfortunately the dev has not updated in a couple years and there are a few minor things that could be fixed, but really as a whole those issues are minor and it is a very usable (and very cool) program.

  • 98 Nick Shepherd | 11.05.2009 at 7:54 pm

How many people here use the most recent unstable release on a regular basis and have nearly no qualms with it minus the annoying wordwrap bug?

    *raises hand*

I am sure there are tons of people that are using it on a daily basis. Intype + Expandrive is my development environment of choice, even as an unstable release. I can accomplish anything necessary for heavy development with this software so anything new is icing on the cake.

I think people just love to complain. Good job Intype team, been using intype for years now and always look forward to new builds from you. Keep up the good work, you’ve got a fan for life; even if it dies right here.

  • 99 Don | 12.05.2009 at 4:13 am

I too am eagerly awaiting the new release like all of you but I think that all of this bitching is not going to help. From what I understand and has been written here they have rebuilt the core of the App so there were no nightly builds that actually functioned. everything had to be re-plugged into the new core. So I think we should be thankful that they are trying to do this right and not just quickly release it to make a buck. So thank you intype looking forward to the next release.

  • 100 DeeLight | 12.05.2009 at 4:52 pm

I agree with Nick Shepherd. I’ve also been using Intype on a daily basis for the past 14-15 months and I have to say that it does the job better & faster than any other editor or IDE I’ve tried (and I’ve tried many). Even if there is no update for another year, I’ll probably still be using Intype, unless I make the switch to Mac. Untill then, I’ll just wait patiently for a new build with file change detection and new blog posts/screencasts (what are you guys waiting for? ;)

  • 101 Anonymous coward | 13.05.2009 at 4:33 am

just install linux mint/ubuntu and install redcar. this project how ever is probably dead, its not OS there making to have this prolonged period of development.

  • 102 Martin Cohen | 13.05.2009 at 9:04 am

Guys, wow. Thank you for the support. This is what driving us. It’s very sad, that 0.3.5 taking so long, but it’s definitely worth it, you’ll see for yourself. In few days we will launch internal testing with our friends to catch the major bugs.

Just hold for few days more and keep your fingers crossed. I’m really looking forward to deliver this one and be able to finally switch to a different development scheme, that will keep us all sane.

  • 103 Robin Drost | 13.05.2009 at 12:40 pm

Thanks for the update Martin :) It show you guys still are doing great work!

  • 104 XanderGC | 13.05.2009 at 8:05 pm

    Hi guys, :D

I’ve been using your last version of InType and I really enjoy it, unfortunately I have also been using Notepad ++ much more often now and that’s a shame. I do see the potential in your software though and I eagerly await your newest update as I feel that you guys have what it takes to create something really special for us Windows users.

Take your time though, cause having a buggy release is way more damaging than having a late one.

    Regards, XGC

  • 105 Xavier | 13.05.2009 at 11:51 pm

I don’t think he meant public with ‘our friends’.

Martin.. i wanna be your friend :(

intype is cool. Waiting for release.

  • 115 Anonymous coward | 20.05.2009 at 9:48 am

@Martin Cohen: You’re lying and I don’t believe you. From this moment on i’m gonna use e-texteditor. BTW, I got your intype nightlies and i must say design is quite good, but i don’t understand why you made intype.exe from 2mb -> 9mb. It’s sad. kthxbye

  • 116 Martin Cohen | 20.05.2009 at 10:16 am

Anonymous coward no.115: I’m not sure how you got to the nighties, perhaps due to an error at our ISP that temporarily enabled Apache listing at our development server’s temp directory lately. Actually it does not matter, it does not even matter that you actually stole it and publicly announced you’re using something you don’t have permission for.

What does matter is that size 9MB is from a debug version, that for easier testing and debugging has all optimizations turned off and also includes myriads of memory corruption checks, method argument validations, automated tests units and other debugging data.

Just to complete the info: the current size of the application in release is 2′050′048 bytes (compiled revision 860), where the 734 release has 2′205′184 bytes having less features. (I just found out this one — interesting isn’t it?)

On one side you’re claiming I lie about internal testing and on the other one you just gave a proof, that the internal testing builds are being released for internal use confirming my announcements. I myself couldn’t do it better, pal.

Thanks for praising the UI, though.

  • 117 Anonymous coward | 20.05.2009 at 10:32 am

No offence, I said you’re lying that you’re releasing it. I was browsing intype.info and somehow i gained access to some of your intypes. It’s good to hear that the filesize is even smaller (wow!). This app i downloaded gives some bugs. I dunno what is the message window. I just hope they’re for better debugging. When i’m closing this app i have some window with error:
    Assertion failed
    Program:
    bla bla bla messag…try.cpp
    line: 278
    Expression: m_ref_counter == 0

    bla bla bla

And some advice: This colorin app you made is awesome, you give it some look and you can release it ;>

  • 118 baael | 20.05.2009 at 10:46 am

wow! I’m little confused. Keep working Martin! Don’t listen those thiefs!

  • 119 Martin Cohen | 20.05.2009 at 10:48 am

Anonymous coward no.117: Yeah, some messages are for better debugging, other are just bugs that we’re removing by now. The colorin app (now called Colron) out there was an old version of something I’m now using for mixing colors for various design projects to prove the concept.

  • 120 Billy Hallman | 20.06.2009 at 10:29 pm

The program is free and it works great. Who cares when the official release is, I use it all of the time and have found NO ERRORS. As for the new site design, looks good, keep it up!

    waiting for the next version…
Hope the project panel can auto refresh :)

What is Intype?

Intype is a powerful and intuitive code editor for Windows with lightning fast response.

It is easily extensible and customizable, thanks in part to its support for scripting and native plug-ins. It makes development in any programming or scripting language quick and easy.

Where can I get it?

Intype is still in development, but the current alpha release is available for download here.
