Development status

As we recently opened the issue tracker to you, it’s good to support and explain the current progress with a general overview of what has been done and what we’re working on currently.

As many of you are just watching the sole number of the issues in the tracker, I’d like to stress out that the list contains both, the tasks and bugs. Bugs come and go, and for the last week we’ve been able to fix and close 69 bugs, and still counting. Logically, as the major bugs are fixed, the minor ones starts to pop up.

We had two sessions last week focused only on testing and fixing, so many of bugs even didn’t make it to the list as we were fixing them immediately. As of yesterday, we have started using Intype on a daily basis to catch the minor issues.

Now about the tasks. We have basically one major component to finish: the project manager. There are some other smaller tasks such as the Go to line dialog and functionality that will take minutes to get done. The project manager is being exclusively developed by Juraj, and I’m focusing on the bugs and the other (smaller) issues and enhancements.

The biggest news from the latest development is that the bundle editor is done. There will be some bugs and enhancements to make it perfect, but I’m really happy about it, as it is end of perhaps the hardest and most critical part in Intype development. I’ll pop some words on how it works in the next post.

    Thumbs up!

  • 4 honza | 17.12.2009 at 10:17 pm

Bwah. Be realistic, if you have something stable now release it without project manager and we will have something new and cool to look forward to in next year.

  • 5 Yarden | 18.12.2009 at 12:28 am

    YES! LETS GO! INTYPE !

  • 7 Anonymous coward | 18.12.2009 at 11:02 am

Don’t be afraid to release. Every software does it. If you can start using Intype on a daily basis, so we can!

  • 8 Julio Protzek | 18.12.2009 at 11:43 am

Good news! I am looking forward the project manager.
Thanks a lot for the better communication.

  • 9 sleetdrop | 18.12.2009 at 11:50 am

    Intype is a just a sage…
Have been developed for years without a realistic release.

  • 10 Pipo Lambert | 19.12.2009 at 12:25 am

Thanks for the udpate!! Please finish by Christmas day, a nice present for all of us :)

…And nice one, saying that it’s all Juraj’s fault ;)

Give these guys a break… it’s not like they DONT want to have it released…

  • 15 cjb | 29.12.2009 at 2:46 am

    But it looks like that…

  • 16 Anonymous coward | 29.12.2009 at 4:56 pm

i hope you guys at least implemented the detection of an opened file modified/updated externally, so i won’t overwrite stuff anymore >:-/

  • 17 Anonymous coward | 01.01.2010 at 1:13 pm

    Happy New Year!

  • 18 cjb | 03.01.2010 at 8:25 pm

Happy New Year and I hope you end this vaporware in this century…

  • 19 Brendon Kozlowski | 05.01.2010 at 4:30 pm

@16: This makes me think that detection is possibly implemented (no definite guarantee yet) http://code.google.com/p/intype/issues/detail?id=18

  • 20 Anonymous coward | 07.01.2010 at 4:42 pm

    Intype very very slow development?WHY?

  • 21 Anonymous coward | 09.01.2010 at 2:46 pm

    Follow the development? What development?!?

  • 22 Richard | 14.01.2010 at 7:50 pm

    Hi,

I have only recently found out about InType and I am really looking forward to using it as my everyday web development editor. I do have to say though.. a lot of the commens above me are highly negative and I would like to ask these people - have you ever developed a piece of software, do you know the time and effort it takes? I thought not… Be patient people!

    Rich

  • 23 Alexander Freiria | 14.01.2010 at 8:22 pm

Any updates on when this will be finished?!?! I am looking forward to this editor…

  • 24 Anonymous coward | 15.01.2010 at 2:05 pm

    Damn i’m waiting LOL

  • 25 Peeved coward | 15.01.2010 at 5:49 pm

Richard: “have you ever developed a piece of software, do you know the time and effort it takes?”
Haha, good question. I’ll try to answer it. Correct me guys, if I’m wrong. Nobody here developed any software in his / her life. We all need Intype just to open txt-files … and I’m sure you know the date of the latest release. Oh, you don’t? Well, it was on the 19th of feb in 2008. But you’re right. Every development needs his 2 years for a release … be realistic Rich!

Found something special for you and the rest, who are patient:

  • 26 Anonymous hero | 19.01.2010 at 1:34 am

Richard on the one hand is right and we all applaud the efforts of the developers. The reason we’re still here making comments about the delays is that InType is AMAZING and the best web and script text editor on windows FULLSTOP and we are all dying for the new release. I check almost every week! On the other hand as he says, he has “only recently found out about InType” and… enough said. We’ll ask you after a few months of dead silence from the devs about your views on this :p.

  • 27 Brendon Kozlowski | 19.01.2010 at 7:36 pm

Development has been ongoing whether the public sees the effort directly or not.

    http://code.google.com/p/intype/issues/detail?id=180

That’s from (as of the time of my post) 100 minutes ago.

  • 28 Rofl | 21.01.2010 at 4:44 pm

Yes, but this development is fast like a dead horse…

  • 29 archetwist | 22.01.2010 at 12:34 am

Release what you have! As a beta version.

  • 30 ausfall | 24.01.2010 at 11:38 pm

I am about to give up waiting for the next release, it’s been quite a while after the 3.1.7 release (almost 2 years!?), with this development tempo you are not going to make it to the final version in next decade, which is sad, intype have had the potential to become a great player in editor’s market.

  • 31 ptr | 26.01.2010 at 9:28 am

Duke Nukem memories arise, seeing this progress. Sad, ’cause I really like this program, it’s my default editor on Windows.

  • 32 Well Known Hero | 01.02.2010 at 9:14 pm

Just checked baack here for the first time in a couple of months and I see that nothing’s progressed. I obviously made the right decision to use a different app as my default editor. You lost a sale guys, sorry, but I couldn’t wait any longer

  • 33 Anonymous coward | 03.02.2010 at 6:09 pm

After more than month it’s still 69 issues to fix. So i’m asking? What development are you talking about?

  • 34 Outtype | 08.02.2010 at 12:16 pm

NASA hired them for a special internal editor, that’s why they didn’t have time in the last four years…

  • 35 Anonymous coward | 08.02.2010 at 2:59 pm

hey! only 69 tickets?. your are amazing guys.

  • 36 Anonymous coward | 08.02.2010 at 7:09 pm

    62 left. stay put :P

Then tell me nothing is happening.

    Keep it up guys!

  • 38 Peeved coward | 10.02.2010 at 12:56 pm

There are again 67 bugs / tasks to fix and it’s still growing. And of the major component they want to finish are just two tasks fixed. Of course, it happens something, but I don’t know what. Everything they develop seems to be a bug, even the bugs are bugs …

Yeah guys, keep the bugfixing up!

    @Deadelus: nothing is really happening!

  • 39 Anonymous coward - not me | 11.02.2010 at 2:44 pm

    Hi,
still waiting for new release, so maybe i ask a question here:
Is there way to turn off tabs? I want intype in editiong mode like notepad, only 1 file, only 1 tab. Is there way to do this? ( i want use intype as editor in eclipse)

  • 40 Deb | 22.02.2010 at 12:01 am

    Hi,

Just wanted to let you know i will pay for Intype when it finally releases. Just for the bundles feature & the robustness i’ll pay. In the meanwhile using 3.1.7 :)

  • 41 Anonymous coward | 22.02.2010 at 2:41 pm

You forgot the 0. I think we’ll never see a 3.x. Not in this life …

  • 42 Anonymous coward | 24.02.2010 at 8:32 pm

Just a question: Why you don’t want to give us unstable releases anymore?

  • 43 Your Mom | 25.02.2010 at 2:27 am

    Is there anybody out there?

  • 44 Oscart™ | 25.02.2010 at 6:30 pm

I remember the times when we check the intype page and we found new unstable versions… oh what a times…

  • 45 Joe Dissapointed | 01.03.2010 at 10:45 am

    @oscart
those were the days … :)

  • 46 Anonymous | 03.03.2010 at 6:49 pm

Nearly three months and not a word

  • 47 Jeff | 04.03.2010 at 1:19 pm

Ah, the natives are restless — a sure sign that project completion is very much anticipated. Intype is already very nice, and I’m sure the work in progress will make it better.

As for me, I have used plenty of software that was rushed into use without adequate development and testing. I paid good money for some of it. I regret that and it leaves me disliking the people who sold it.

Unlike a lot of software out there, I think this project is worth the wait and I wish you guys the best in finishing it to your satisfaction (and ours). Cheers to you and your families! Don’t let development fever take away too much of your time with your loved ones and your life.

  • 48 baaelSiljan | 05.03.2010 at 12:21 pm

yes, but for now, some fixes in 0.3 will be great, like fix space intendation or add file listener. currently I guess next version will not come soon.

  • 49 Anonymous coward | 20.03.2010 at 2:57 am

This project is dead? someone (Development Team) please confirm or write some news or info

  • 50 Anonymous coward | 20.03.2010 at 4:26 pm

Please inform us if this software will continue to develop.

  • 51 Anonymous coward | 21.03.2010 at 6:59 pm

  • 52 Anonymous | 22.03.2010 at 7:47 pm

Honestly, when are you guys going to release this thing? The _ONLY_ piece of software that I miss from my mac is TextMate. If you guys can continue with the awesome work that you’ve done on InType, and _actually_ finish it. I’d buy 10 copies just to give to friends to help spread the love. Just finish it already!!! If not, then you should release it as open source so someone else can finish it.

  • 53 Anonymous | 22.03.2010 at 7:58 pm

BTW, great progress guys! :) I’m excited, but am losing patience.

  • 54 Rene | 23.03.2010 at 4:22 pm

WoW there are a lot open Tickets for 0.3.5. I think we can not expect a release in the near Future.

  • 55 Anonymous coward | 24.03.2010 at 1:11 am

yes, i think You guys should open current alpha intype, or at least some parts, to make people able to compile and make own features. You dont loose anything, cause more people will find some other applications, and those who like it, will buy new version in any case.

  • 56 H5N1 | 29.03.2010 at 2:54 am

I’m testing Intype just like a (X)HTML/CSS/Javascript editor as alternative to Notepad++.
Even if I know how important and useful can be a Project Manager for other kind of project I think that you can stripe it from a “light” release.
In my case, for example, it’s just enough I can close the editor and have back all previously opened document restarting Intype.
    Think about it! ;)

  • 57 baaelSiljan | 30.03.2010 at 5:28 pm

    @H5N1
and You have to set up intendation in all documents, especially when You work with python, sass, haml, also if You forget to close and reopen file, You can overwrite repository changes, it is cruel! :P

  • 58 Radjesh | 01.04.2010 at 9:23 pm

Hope you’ll come with a new version soon. Thanks in advance. Using inType for my CSS and HTML. Many thanks guys.

  • 59 SciTE fan | 08.04.2010 at 5:23 am

I’ve recently come to a conclusion that SciTE is a good alternative to Intype. Not only it is actively maintained but it also is faster and more configurable. Oh, and it can automatically save your file when you switch to another application, too (useful when editing files via an FTP client). The only drawback is that it doesn’t have bundles but I never used them anyway.

  • 60 Anonymous coward | 14.04.2010 at 1:35 pm

The UI is killer. keep it goin

  • 61 Outtype | 21.04.2010 at 3:48 pm

Keep it goin what? Being dead?

  • 62 Nikolay Kolev | 23.04.2010 at 12:54 am

With all due respect, Intype is the most poorly managed software project in the world! Martin, have you heard the term “expectations management”? Google it, please, and learn how important it is and start applying it to Intype!

  • 63 dponinski | 23.04.2010 at 4:24 pm

I am really excited for this to come to a stable state. I work on a Mac at home and love Coda but at work I use a Windows and stuck to Dreamweaver. This is my solution to Coda. Only suggestion is to allow me to work locally and remotely on one project in the project column. Other than that, friggin sweet!

  • 64 Joe Dissapointed | 09.05.2010 at 10:19 am

As mentioned on the forum - if you aren’t able to finish InType since years - why don’t you simply open source it the way it is (or it was at a specific tag/branch)?
The latest published build was quite good for use (quite fast and nice) - from that point (source code from that tag), there are many developers that could continue and help to get a stable version.

What is Intype?

Intype is a powerful and intuitive code editor for Windows with lightning fast response.

It is easily extensible and customizable, thanks in part to its support for scripting and native plug-ins. It makes development in any programming or scripting language quick and easy.

Where can I get it?

Intype is still in development, but the current alpha release is available for download here.
