Feature Update

The Intype Team has been working very hard lately. Here are some feature videos, screenshots, and a screencast covering some recently added features. The Multi-Snippet feature is especially slick.

Martin and Centi have also created a ToDo List. Don’t be scared of the length. Most of the current tasks are Plugging 0.2.x features back in to the new refactored code base. This usually only takes a few minutes to do. Martin will be updating this list as features are tuned and added.

    Awesome!

  • 2 JPhantom | 01.08.2007 at 7:24 pm

It looks incredible. Thanks for giving something for us to chew on for a while.

  • 3 Tom | 01.08.2007 at 7:45 pm

Looks good but you haven’t given a timeframe?

There are 11 “Plug Back” tasks… If we say each takes 4 minutes… that’s 44 minutes. Does this mean we are going to see something today / tomorrow?

  • 4 Woodwater | 01.08.2007 at 9:19 pm

    Can’t wait!

    Keep it up!

  • 5 Anonymous coward | 01.08.2007 at 9:43 pm

    Sound fire!!

  • 6 Keith | 01.08.2007 at 11:44 pm

The rectangle feature is wonderful addition! Excellent!!

  • 7 h | 02.08.2007 at 5:25 am

Can’t wait, guys! Great work :)

  • 8 Shawn Oster | 02.08.2007 at 6:46 am

I’m curious about the multiple selection, if there will be “select word” support. Currently it looks like the mouse is being used to drag select each character with I’m assuming some hotkey. What I’m hoping is that you’ll be able to do hotkey + double-click on a word to completely select it.

    Make any sense?

  • 9 Shaun Walker | 04.08.2007 at 4:13 pm

    Sweet!!!

Can’t wait to see this release out :)

  • 10 Arik | 06.08.2007 at 6:27 am

    Slightly pumped.

  • 11 Anonymous coward | 06.08.2007 at 8:52 pm

Hm, seems like undo/redo was at 90% yesterday (in the morning)… I’m starting to get bored.

  • 12 Tom | 06.08.2007 at 10:18 pm

    Its a complete joke.

  • 13 Kasper | 06.08.2007 at 11:03 pm

Keep up the good work - and keep the productivity in the sky, here at the last moments before a 0.3.1 release :)

  • 14 Brad | 07.08.2007 at 12:59 am

Tom: Exactly correct. Seems like this crew takes very little pride in their work…

There have been countless requests for previews of the basic gui at the very least (not to mention previews of the functionality). There have been just as many requests to open a pre-pay system so as to keep the developers just as excited and focused on the project as the (not so) patiently waiting customers.

And I realize that thus far the designers “owe us nothing,” but I feel that their negligence in releasing upon date or at least continuing posting with current feedback and encouragement will eventually run this project into the ground.

Yet, I am caught in the middle of things because I realize that once released this product will be one of a kind and highly usable/stable.

So, developers… Continue working hard > Post often > Release more frequently!

  • 15 Martin Cohen | 07.08.2007 at 1:19 am

Brad: We are very motivated and focused. We don’t need any support, except for your patience. We want to deliver the next release with all of its beauty. We are sending updates to the community at the forums on almost an hourly basis.

Meeting the deadlines is what makes software projects great. The top Linux distros, Eclipse, and Netbeans are some of the greatest software projects ever, because they deliver quality and deliver it on time.

I have been tinkering with e recently since I had the need to do a find/replace. It’s a decent editor but I still prefer Intype. I have found one compelling reason to stick with Intype though. I opened a file with e and the app took up 122mb of ram. Doing the same thing in Intype took up 13mb. That’s a significant difference. I hope that although Intype is getting a ton of new features it can maintain the small/minimalist footprint that it currently has. I’m not a fan of bloat. Anyway.. that’s just my buck o’ five while I wait for the precious.

  • 19 Anonymous coward | 07.08.2007 at 7:42 am

    E is approaching 1.0

If Intype wants to get in the game they have to move fast.

Kaged, Intype took up 13MB but that is because it doesn’t have ANY features yet. I support development, but in its current form, it isn’t much.

  • 20 Rob | 07.08.2007 at 12:19 pm

Hello there, I really like what you have so far so please keep up the good work =]

My apologies because this has probably been mentioned or asked before but I’m not as familiar with the short cut keys as people who’ve been programming for a long time. Is there some documentation or quick reference guide planned?
Also, it’s probably a bit too much of a ball-ache but is it possible to make some sort of overlay on the screen casts to log your keyboard commands? So we can see the mouse and the keystrokes used? (obviously no obligation but I’d like to start learning how to use this to its full potential)

    Ta very much

  • 21 Anonymous coward | 07.08.2007 at 12:37 pm

They have to release it first Rob

  • 22 Rob | 07.08.2007 at 12:54 pm

    Fair enough…

  • 23 Anonymous coward | 08.08.2007 at 12:17 pm

Martin could you please give us an update.

Did you fix the undo problems? Are you going to release today or not?

  • 24 Brad | 08.08.2007 at 2:07 pm

    Heh… two days later…

  • 25 Anonymous coward | 08.08.2007 at 2:28 pm

This almost like Windows Vista right now :/… Let’s hope both that Intype’s developers and Intype itself, will perform a little better than Windows Vista.

  • 26 Lasse | 08.08.2007 at 2:36 pm

On the other hand, Window Vista wasn’t even finished when it was released. Personally, I would prefer a finished product, released later, over an unfinished product, released earlier.

By that I mean, I’m sure Martin uses the time he thinks is needed, for the program to be as he wants it before he releases it.

  • 27 Brad | 08.08.2007 at 4:08 pm

Lasse: which is definitely a commendable effort.

I just feel like I may end up learning perl and its intricacies before this product is released (which also would be a commendable effort) =P

  • 28 Woodwater | 08.08.2007 at 4:39 pm

I’d really like a mailing list. I’m coming to check the site every 5 hours of every day. :)

  • 29 bikoz | 08.08.2007 at 4:49 pm

I mut be crazy, I’m coming to check the site every 45 minutes today :-)

  • 30 Brad | 08.08.2007 at 4:51 pm

Heh, I probably check the site more than anyone =) (might explain my recent impatience)

  • 31 bikoz | 08.08.2007 at 5:18 pm

Brad: why don’t you learn Perl and write a small program to check site updates automatically for you?

  • 32 Anonymous coward | 08.08.2007 at 5:55 pm

    do you know RSS ?

  • 33 Anonymous coward | 08.08.2007 at 5:56 pm

Also, permit anonymous posting is dangerous and I surprised that this blog hasn’t been yet spamed…

  • 34 Nikolay Kolev | 08.08.2007 at 5:57 pm

Margin: you will release 0.3.1 next week, right? Let’s not keep everybody waiting and cursing meanwhile. If you didn’t meet the first date, just make sure you give a realistic second one. We all check the site hourly hoping, but the plugbacks from your list which you say takes minutes seem to take days and weeks - Undo/Redo is still at 90% and it’s been like this for days!

  • 35 Nikolay Kolev | 08.08.2007 at 6:03 pm

    Martin: Sorry about the typo.

  • 36 Brad | 08.08.2007 at 6:54 pm

bikoz: lets be realistic. At this rate a continually running perl script to check updates for this application would be a waste of resources :)

That aside, I am biding my time providing bug reports for the new EmEditor professional version.

  • 37 Tom | 08.08.2007 at 7:33 pm

    Still no update…

  • 38 Woodwater | 08.08.2007 at 7:50 pm

    I don’t use RSS.

    It’s the devil’s technology!!!

Give me a good’ol mailing list any day!

    hehehe…*sigh*.

  • 39 Arik | 08.08.2007 at 8:10 pm

Another promise gone to the crapper. Wow, inType is loose credibility by the hour.

  • 40 Eric | 08.08.2007 at 9:50 pm

I agree with Nikolay…Checking the site hourly since a few days for a release that is stated something like 99% done is a bit frustrating.

  • 41 Anonymous coward | 08.08.2007 at 11:00 pm

I think, that the best thing the Intype team can do now, is to re-validate their TODO list. That would give a more clear view of what’s needed before the 0.3.1 release, and thereby reducing these “wired” posts.

  • 42 Anonymous coward | 08.08.2007 at 11:53 pm

In past post Martin sounded like he doesn’t care when they will release it as they have things planned that the blow out the competition. This type of pathologic self-confidence and attitude has closed many businesses. Martin said here - I don’t need your support, I need you to be patient. Martin, time is the most precious resource known as it can’t be replenished. It’s priceless! If I don’t see a release by this week’s end, I will chose not to wait any longer. I can’t give you any more from the most precious thing I have, sorry! You have to be fast and keep promises to customers (even unpaid ones) to succeed! Same applies to free open-source software.

  • 43 Anonymous coward | 09.08.2007 at 1:44 am

inType reminds me of Evrsoft’s 1st Page 2000. They waited almost 3 years before putting out a new version. And they are but another blackhole in the world of texteditors.

If the folks at inType don’t get off their high-horse soon, even their die-hard users will leave and even for inType, switch to E-text editor (which I am a huge supporter of). I’m not throwing mud here, but seriously the only reason I plopped down $35 for my E license was because the release schedule was exciting and reasonably fast. I really like where inType is going, however the release schedule compared

  • 44 Nikolay Kolev | 09.08.2007 at 4:20 am

To compare attitudes, the following is from the 1.0 stable release announcement of e yesterday:

“Finally e is coming out of beta.

Thanks a lot for all the support. I could never have come this far without all you guys. Your enthusiasm have been a great push, and some of you have really put in a lot of effort to make e the best it could be.”

At the same time, as the previous posted mentioned, Martin says: “I don’t need your support.”

  • 45 David Sissitka | 09.08.2007 at 4:33 am

Nikolay Kolev: I like how “We don’t need any support, except for your patience.” was twisted into “I don’t need your support.”.

  • 46 Thomas Bell | 09.08.2007 at 4:48 am

Yeah I agree. I don’t think Martin meant anything along those lines.
I think martin welcomes support and help. He was stating that what he really needed most was patience.

  • 47 Anonymous coward | 09.08.2007 at 5:41 am

What is all the fuss about anyway… an alpha release?

Come on guys. I don’t understand why people are so anxiously awaiting the arrival of an unfinished product. It’s not like you could use it in a production environment. Cut the developers some slack and allow them to release when they are ready.

  • 48 Anonymous coward | 09.08.2007 at 1:34 pm

    Guys,

Why don’t you publish 0.3.1, we can’t wait. The logic behind this project is awesome.

Well, I guess you can provide a download link for 0.3.1, it’s still in alpha, nobody complains about this.

  • 49 Caml | 09.08.2007 at 4:28 pm

Wow. This is takin’ really lot’s of time :). I’ve never seen so much release time (6 months) between two minor alphas of a small product. Even if it’s a “complete refactoring”, from a user point of view it’s just a small “new alpha improvement” so I wonder how can people wait so much :).

  • 50 Arik | 09.08.2007 at 4:33 pm

This is the kind of timeline you have when your product is actually stable and you’re trying to implement large features. Lets get this movin guys.

  • 51 j | 09.08.2007 at 10:31 pm

Thanks for the realease guys!!!! awsome work!!!

  • 52 No support Chinese | 06.09.2007 at 10:21 am

It’s very good Editor, but it’s not support Chinese :(.

  • 53 Juan Alejandro | 14.09.2007 at 6:29 am

I downloaded Intype today and i have been using it for my university projects. Its really good editing code. Im a Linux user needed to use windows for several reasons so i used to use gPHPEdit as my editor code and it has a feature id like to see inside Intype: when i open gPHPEdit it remembers the files i was using last time and it opens them. This feature is very simple maybe, but it saves time in open all the files you need.

    Regards, from México.
