Features For The Next Release

posted by Martin Cohen in Features | January 21st, 2007 |

First release is few weeks available and now it’s time for release 0.2.1. What features will the new release bring to you?

  • Undo/Redo
  • Indentation Settings (hard tabs, soft tabs, indent size)
  • Preferences Dialog (level 1) for setting theme and font
  • CJK Support for over-the-spot input method. See screenshot.
  • Drag&Drop Files support (level 1)
  • And a handful of new bundles: ActionScript · ANTLR · CAKE · Django & DjangoTemplates · Haskell · JavaScript YUI · JSP · LaTeX · BibTeX · LaTeX Beamer · LaTeX Memoir · LaTeX Log · TeX · TeX Math · reStructuredText · SQL · TurboGears · Perl

Our community is working hard on bundles and themes for Intype since the first release. Smart guys from the forums revisited bundles from the first release and even created new ones. All updated and new bundles will be available with the new release for Intype as well as for the TextMate users. I’d like to thank them all for their interest in making Intype better from the very start. Thank you, guys!

    Sounds awesome. Can’t wait.

  • 2 Albertus | 21.01.2007 at 10:39 pm

I have not words to thank you! The Undo/Redo and Indentation Settings are the most important missing features. Intype will be soon a beatiful reality in my daily work. I can’t wait!

  • 3 Jack Sleight | 21.01.2007 at 11:26 pm

Fantastic. I actually used the current release to do some real work for the first time the other day, and the only major thing that I REALLY needed was undo/redo. I don’t suppose you know when it will available?

  • 4 Martin Cohen | 22.01.2007 at 12:26 am

Jack Sleight: The estimation is one week.

  • 5 Johan Bakken | 22.01.2007 at 12:30 am

I’m really looking forward to this release. Hooray!

  • 6 kib2 | 22.01.2007 at 12:54 am

Very good work, the only thing I miss for the moment is word wrap, I still have to wait for it, but undo/redo is very important too. Thanks a lot.
Martin : do you have some time to sleep ?!

  • 7 nickcheng | 22.01.2007 at 3:04 am

    good job!
    waiting for the release…

  • 8 finalage | 22.01.2007 at 4:13 am

Villa holla. but martin, how about the searching functions?

  • 9 marchbox | 22.01.2007 at 5:11 am

great!! and how about the horizon scrollbar?

  • 10 Pipo Lambert | 22.01.2007 at 6:19 am

Excellent! Can’t wait to download it - undo/redo is what prevented me from using it in real world scenario…

Feature request (along with horizontal toolbar): when holding down Ctrl and mouseWheeling, Textpad scrolls horizontally. It is a very handy feature for long lines of code, and I have not seen it in any other editor.

Intype will be Textpad’s companion or replacement on my PCs (depending on how Intype competes with low-level text editing, macros…)

Thanks for bringing this editor to the market, Martin. I hope you make a fortune and can focuse on bringing us the smartest editor on the planet :)

  • 11 temnor | 22.01.2007 at 10:58 am

    django bundle - thumbs up!

  • 12 John | 22.01.2007 at 11:00 am

Just want to say: Keep up the great work, I love this editor and I will pay for it later. And I can’t wait the new release. :-)

    Greeting from Germany,

    John

  • 13 Martin Cohen | 22.01.2007 at 12:12 pm

There’s one thing to note before I start answering your feature questions: I’m first user of Intype. I’m using it for serious work since 0.1.0 (even if it was buggy and unstable) and waiting for features like all you guys do. The multi-document support, word wrap, search function - those are essentials to me. But I have to wait until we get to them by plan. Planning is crucial.

Word Wrap is planned for implementation, however it’s little tricky due to support of non-proportional fonts. So we delayed it to time when multi-docs and search capabilities are implemented. I hope that it’ll be soon.

Search is planned after the Multi-Doc support (will be introduced in 0.2.2). Search is planned for 0.2.3.

  • 14 Martin Cohen | 22.01.2007 at 12:34 pm

Oh, and Horizontal scrollbar may appear in this release (0.2.1), but if it will block the release, we shift it to some update of 0.2.1…

  • 15 DarkRaver | 22.01.2007 at 12:53 pm

Horizontal scrollbar in 0.2.1 !!! What a good news ;)

  • 16 Martin Cohen | 22.01.2007 at 1:43 pm

For any other feature requests use our forums so we can discuss them and have them at one place.

  • 17 avinashv | 22.01.2007 at 8:25 pm

Thanks for this Martin! Good to know what’s going on, and good to see a great set of upcoming features!

  • 18 Martin Labuschin | 23.01.2007 at 12:05 am

What does “Drag&Drop Files” mean? Could i drag text based files from my desktop into the document to paste its content? That would be great!

  • 19 Martin Cohen | 23.01.2007 at 12:24 am

Martin Labuschin: In D&D Level 1 support you can only drop a file to open it in Intype. In D&D Level 2 you will able to catch the drop event in a script and decide what to do with it (for example insert it’s contents to document or copy to project folder and create a insert link to a document). D&D Level 2 will be introduced after the Scripting feature, that is planned for 0.4.x releases.

  • 20 Martin Labuschin | 23.01.2007 at 1:20 am

sounds cool. i’m looking foward to v.0.4 :)

  • 21 Vladimir Cvetic | 24.01.2007 at 11:38 am

    What about code highlight ?

  • 22 Vladimir Cvetic | 24.01.2007 at 11:40 am

Here is the list of features I would love to see:
    1. Code highlight
    2. Some sort of file explorer, ftp also

thats all for now, keep it simple great work so far

  • 23 hvge | 24.01.2007 at 12:23 pm

Vladimir Cvetic: What code highlighting you have on your mind?

  • 24 Brian | 24.01.2007 at 8:47 pm

Downloaded and tried it. Wow! I really found it intuitive to use and already felt like I could code efficiently with this tool. This keyword/snippet works great and auto generates the right amount of code to be helpful. Keep up the great work!! I am looking forward to a full release with some of the features already mentioned above. I guess a file browser with Subversion support is in the plans - that would be great. The ability to have multiple files open with easy navigation between them would be great too. I am just excited to have the possibility to use a tool in the spirit of TextMate (which I use on my Mac at home) on my Windows box at work. I can’t wait!

  • 25 radomil.martinec_AT_gmail.com | 25.01.2007 at 10:33 am

Hi guys, I am from czech republic. Pretty good job. Even the low version nuber is quite cool piece of software. But ! Could you add a multiple document tabbing to the next version. (Záložky dokumentů - viz. PsPAD). Thanks

  • 26 Martin Cohen | 25.01.2007 at 12:24 pm

radomil: Sure, tabs are in our plan for release 0.2.2. There are many standard, as well as new features. All you have to do is stay tuned. “Release early” strategy has it’s cost. For the list of requested and planned features, check our forums out.

  • 27 Alexander Graf | 25.01.2007 at 5:50 pm

I’m already doing some “real” development work with Intype. The features I’m missing so far are

    - Undo / Redo (any word on how many undo/redo operations will be possible?)
    - File Drag Drop
    - Search / Replace with Regexp
    - Multi Files

and since these will be available very soon, Intype will become my main Textediting tool on Windows in the next weeks =)

    Great work guys!

  • 28 Martin Cohen | 26.01.2007 at 3:20 pm

Alexander: I’m glad to know that. Features you’ve mention are already on top of our todo list and will appear soon.

  • 29 oDesk | 26.01.2007 at 3:23 pm

i just navigate to intype.info to ask developer stuff to consider these features
and i’m happy to find all what i wanted about to be done :)

really cant wait, it’s generic and lightweight editor

Thanks inType developers for this very good work

    yours

  • 30 Nick | 29.01.2007 at 2:02 am

Just want to let you know, I WILL be buying this when it comes out. So please, please, please finish it. I really hope this project doesn’t fail.

    Keep up the good work.

  • 31 Color Charge | 30.01.2007 at 1:57 am

I liked it. Seems to be a good idea you’ve been working on.

    Features I’d suggest:

    - site/project/folder managment;
    - local/remote folder synchr. (ftp, or anything else);
    - a more trustful first-run, with tutorial, or guidance.

and please, let it always be small, lean, fast, and reliable. Something not very common these days.

  • 32 MiPo | 31.01.2007 at 1:20 pm

Do you plan to release Linux version?
Intype doesn’t work in Wine. Installation is OK. When I start wine intype.exe, after while application window appears for second and disappears without any error message in terminal.

  • 33 Martin Cohen | 31.01.2007 at 2:07 pm

MiPo: There are reports like this in the forums and our attitude in F.A.Q.’s. However, the next release got a little better in start-up under Wine (we’ve got some missing methods in libs, but we haven’t made deeper testing yet).

  • 34 Peter | 31.01.2007 at 5:53 pm

I’m really looking forward to the multi-doc and the undo/redo feature

  • 35 Andlei | 01.02.2007 at 12:33 pm

That sounds nice, when can we expect a symfony (php framework) bundle ? It is available for TextMate maybe it could just be converted in some way..
    Thumbs up for intype

  • 36 Martin Cohen | 01.02.2007 at 2:21 pm

Andlei: No problem. Just second the same request at forums, so we know that nini is not alone. :)

  • 37 Dan K. | 02.02.2007 at 11:34 pm

Hey, looks like you’re doing a good job. Just wanted to ask — what do you mean by TurboGears support. You probably mean Kid generally, don’t you?

  • 38 Azad | 03.02.2007 at 8:07 pm

how about Tabs (like the ones in Firefox) for editing multiple files?

  • 39 Garrett | 03.02.2007 at 9:59 pm

    AHHHHHH! So excited!!!!!

  • 40 WhiteHat | 03.02.2007 at 10:04 pm

Amazing editor, really fall in love…

    Features?
    -Multiple file editor
    -LaTeX

Thanks for really great editor for work.

  • 41 WhiteHat | 04.02.2007 at 8:17 pm

Sorry, I found LaTeX. My fail. But what about some configurable menu for calling extern programs like compilers?

  • 42 Marcelo | 05.02.2007 at 4:36 am

    Access prompt-DOS

  • 43 Switch | 05.02.2007 at 10:53 am

I would love FTP support for direct editing :)

  • 44 WhiteT | 05.02.2007 at 11:27 am

This looks very nice, just missing features, and with those features this will easily knock aside my current RoR editor (Stuck on a Windows box at work).

Tabs, Undo/Redo.. though they’re on the list anyways, anything else I can do from my prompt :)

  • 45 B.B | 05.02.2007 at 11:29 am

    Syntax for .ini files.

  • 46 Minh | 05.02.2007 at 11:41 am

    Great job !

  • 47 Piku | 05.02.2007 at 11:55 am

Great job for Intype, really useful for Ruby on Rails
It’s been almost a month since your post and no new version of Intype :|
Also, will you introduce, besides multi-file suport (tabs) a small file browser so I can open different files of my project from Intype not from Windows Explorer ?

  • 48 Martin Cohen | 05.02.2007 at 12:04 pm

There’s Feature requests forum with all info you may have about the requested features. And there’s Bundles/Addons forum for bundle requests and discussions. So check it out to get more info.

  • 49 David Collantes | 05.02.2007 at 7:05 pm

I consider adding Search and Replace capabilities very important. Please consider so.

  • 50 Jared Schwager | 05.02.2007 at 7:55 pm

Can’t wait for the next release. I think Intype may replace Dreamweaver for me!

  • 51 Copernic | 05.02.2007 at 8:28 pm

Martin, any news on when we could expect new version?

    Thanks and good luck!

  • 52 Warlock-G | 05.02.2007 at 8:58 pm

Hi, and the “code fold”? for any version?

  • 53 bill at acrosstheline dot net | 05.02.2007 at 9:39 pm

    What about Find and Replace?

Personally, I’d like the find dialog to look and work like Firefox, with the addition of a “Replace with” text box and “Replace button” perhaps.

  • 54 Jason | 05.02.2007 at 10:32 pm

Nice app! Would love the ability to have tabs so I can edit multiple files. Keep up the good work!

  • 55 Bombadil | 05.02.2007 at 10:42 pm

Guys, does anybody from you actually read the comments written earlier?

    For example this one: http://intype.info/blog/features-for-next-release/#comment-561

You are asking questions posted and answered many time before. I don’t think that it’s easy for Martin to answer the same questions again and again.

And you sure should visit Intype forums ( http://intype.info/forums/ ) for Feature requests or any other useful info.

  • 56 Tim | 05.02.2007 at 10:54 pm

Question regarding the Actionscript bundle, will it be for Actionscript 2 or 3?

  • 57 tstrokes | 06.02.2007 at 2:22 am

the actionscript bundle from textmate has already been requested and converted.
    http://intype.info/download/bundles/

  • 58 Peter | 06.02.2007 at 4:00 am

Nice job, very clean and light but powerful! :) Keep good work.

Will it have an easy tab/pane to browse the folder and files and double click it to open?

    Thanks!

  • 59 pet | 06.02.2007 at 6:12 am

I like intype.. Greaaaaattttttttttttttttt! can u make intype to work in linux. Thanks

  • 60 michaelGregoire | 06.02.2007 at 4:08 pm

Good job so far. I’m looking forward to using this once undo/redo is added. As a mac owner and TextMate user, I never thought that an app would be developed for windows that could match it. When at work, I’ve been settling on ConText, but now I’ll have a REAL text editor, once intype matures a bit.

  • 61 Nick Parker | 06.02.2007 at 10:27 pm

It would be great if it had a window that showed the folder directories like textmate. Also, if you could add tab support for multiple documents as well.

  • 62 Nick Parker | 07.02.2007 at 12:26 am

A textmate theme would be nice as well.

  • 63 iMei | 07.02.2007 at 9:02 am

I’m already loving it. Three things are missing for me: Undo/Redo support, folders/files view for project and multiple tabs support.

  • 64 Anonymous coward | 12.02.2007 at 5:05 pm

Great! Multiple tabs and this will be my only editor. Right now it’s too much of a pain working with one file at a time :-(

    Good work so far though!

  • 65 Dat Chu | 12.02.2007 at 11:58 pm

This has got to be the best thing since sliced bread. (and ham, butter, double-quarter cheese burgers,…)

  • 66 Anonymous coward | 14.02.2007 at 1:57 pm

Great and neat little app! I have my eyes on you, guys! ;-) Good work, so far!

  • 67 Joel Pittet | 23.02.2007 at 10:50 pm

    Programmer’s Notepad 2 v0.6.1
    http://www.pnotepad.org/download/

This open source project has some nice features and is fast. Maybe you can play with it for some ideas.

  • 68 Anonymous coward | 24.02.2007 at 10:20 pm

+1 for Linux. A simple to install and light editor with the features of intype would be great.

  • 69 dall | 13.03.2007 at 1:26 am

Wow, cool editor, it really needs a search/replace!
    Thanks.

  • 70 Mike Literman | 21.03.2007 at 8:56 pm

I am so excited for the future releases of this program. Everyone has already voiced how great this will be and any programmer will find it to be the number one tool in their arsenal. I am coming from an EditPlus2 background and it’s nice, but minus tabs, I think that this program already beats it. Keep up the good work and I will support you the whole way.

  • 71 Martin Cohen | 22.03.2007 at 12:05 pm

Mike: Thank you for the support. We will do our best. All basic features are on the way. The 0.2.2 will bring big advance, I hope you’ll like.

  • 72 Mythos | 18.04.2007 at 12:08 am

I was looking the editor and i think is a great aplication, have many future.
    I really like it!

  • 73 Mark | 18.04.2007 at 9:32 am

    Thank You
