Juraj is back, Intype release is coming

posted by Martin Cohen in Miscellaneous | July 10th, 2007 |

The Intype Team is again at full strength (even stronger really) for the first time in 3 months. During that time, I’ve practically rewritten everything within the Intype core. I’ve made everything faster, clearer, and cleaner. I opened up the core making it possible for new functionality to be added quickly. The core is now ready to accommodate all the features that were planned for 1.0. Meaning many new features are on the way.

Juraj is back and happy to be working full-time on Intype! Let’s celebrate! Right away he started working with the refactored core making some slick new additions. Welcome Back Juraj!

With Juraj back and because of my refactoring work development will be much smoother. We updated the road-map and are steadily moving towards the next major version: Intype 0.3.1 which we will release at the end of this month. Intype 0.4.0 (Project Management, JavaScript API) is planned for sometime in September 2007.

Looking forward to it! I can play the new version in less than 20 days!!! Woooohhoohhhh!

  • 2 Woodwater | 10.07.2007 at 3:36 pm

    Can’t wait.

I’ve had to switch back to Komodo edit due to the lack of Search within Intype. It was really making my life harder then it needed to be.

Honestly and truly cannot wait to try the new version.

    Cheers.

  • 3 Jose E. | 10.07.2007 at 3:45 pm

    Great news!

    I can´t wait.

  • 4 John | 10.07.2007 at 3:58 pm

    Wow, thats great news!

    Thanks!

  • 5 BrendonKoz | 10.07.2007 at 4:02 pm

Glad to see some information on what’s been going on. I understand you wanted to focus your work on Intype and not answering 100’s of similar questions, so I don’t mind, but I do like that we at least know something’s happening.

    How’s life been, Martin? :)

  • 6 Martin Cohen | 10.07.2007 at 4:41 pm

BrendonKoz: Life’s been hard. Got lot of work at my daily job, and spent nights rewriting the Intype for the new release — especially the last 3 months, when I’ve been working alone. I’m glad, Juraj is back. :)

But as far as I can see, it was really worth it. I myself cannot wait when it becomes fully usable as planned for this version. Search & Replace, Tabs, Multi-Selections and other nice features are really motivating. We have plenty of new ideas for many aspects of the Intype project, and everything is getting better each hour spent on development of Intype.

Hurry up, this is the slowest development I have ever seen.

  • 8 Rafaël | 10.07.2007 at 6:12 pm

    Great news!!
This will be hard to wait :)

  • 9 Anonymous coward | 10.07.2007 at 6:44 pm

    awsome work! cant wait

  • 10 Joseph Hsu | 10.07.2007 at 7:28 pm

Thank you! I’ve been looking forward to this new update!

  • 11 Arik | 10.07.2007 at 8:00 pm

I am excited for whats to come… Maybe now there will be an actual competitor to E. We’ll just have to see I guess.

  • 12 Anonymous Coward | 10.07.2007 at 8:01 pm

Does this mean we will see more blog updates in the mean time?

  • 13 Xavier | 10.07.2007 at 9:06 pm

Great news! Would be a great “small” addition to have a “Text > show invisibles” menu command too ;)

  • 14 Anonymous coward | 10.07.2007 at 11:12 pm

    post us a screenshot :)

  • 15 Nikolay Kolev | 11.07.2007 at 12:14 am

Why don’t you allow future customers like me to pre-order - I think many of us will be happy tol do it, if it will help motivate your team and even hire more people. I can’t stand e (your only competitor under Windows), I don’t have a Mac in order to use TextMate, so, you’re my only hope! Keep up the great work - I really enjoy Intype, even in its infancy!

  • 16 Tony Lamar | 11.07.2007 at 1:48 am

    Nikolay,

    I totally agree with you.
I also think that the Intype team should allow pre-orders, but of course this would force them to post here more and to have some approximate deadlines :).

    Tony.
P.S. I think most users arround are in the same situation: they would be more than glad to order if it would be possible, and this for their entire teams.

  • 17 Branstrom | 11.07.2007 at 2:22 am

Believe it or not, I’ve gotten to know vim a little better, since I’ve gotten tired of jEdit… (which I used before and after all previous releases of Intype) and I must say I like it. Though I probably will switch back when Intype comes around with new strength, I’m quite happy using vim for now. It was daunting at first, with vim you have a lot of power at the tip of your fingers, but once you’ve gotten to know the commands and the way to look up all the commands you don’t know about yet… it’s pretty cozy. And very efficient.

  • 18 h | 11.07.2007 at 4:15 am

Awesome news. I think I just need search and word wrap to start using Intype as my primary editor! Which is mighty impressive for an alpha product.

  • 19 ElvisCai.com | 11.07.2007 at 5:42 am

    Cool!

  • 20 Cofyc | 11.07.2007 at 5:47 am

    Great news!
also think Intype team should allow pre-orders.

  • 21 yarden | 11.07.2007 at 8:19 am

    sound gooodd

  • 22 Demetrios Kyriakis | 11.07.2007 at 10:59 am

    +10 for pre-orders.

    Demetrios.
P.S. Don’t forget a small discount for early “buyers”.

  • 23 Kuka Mihaj | 11.07.2007 at 1:55 pm

I’d like to preorder too for my team a few licenses if it were possible. I’d also like an Intype t-shirt with the logo and the slogan :D.
Oh yeah, and since it’s my birthday I would have one more wish: I would also like an Intype book (somehow like the Textmate book, but not the same since it’s not that great). I understand that the Intype team won’t have the time to write such a book alone but it could setup a community book review system like the Django one:
    http://www.djangobook.com/en/beta/
It’s just cool how users can help the review.

  • 24 Martin Cohen | 11.07.2007 at 4:18 pm

As long as we move through this early alpha stage (meaning sometime after 0.6) we will consider pre-ordering.

As for the book, we hope that our documentation system will be sufficient for both use cases the reference manual and the book. We already have started work on it, but due to upcoming release, we focus more on development. Also, some details are not at the final stage, some things will slightly change when JavaScript API comes.

  • 25 Gianni | 11.07.2007 at 4:51 pm

The tshirt idea is not bad at all. It could bring the team some early cash (and motivation to develop faster :) ). I would buy a few if they were white, XL sized and with that green logo.

AFAIK the TMate book sells very well, despite the good free tmate help, so it’s worth having one as an extra cash source for any product (especially when products have similar prices with IT books :) ). Also, considering that a book has many chapters, it’s worth starting it now even if that “JavaScript API” is not available, since some chapters can be made later.
That django review system is in fact a Yahoo UI plug-in for Wordpress comments, so it would be easy to setup (see the author’s site).

  • 26 Nikolay Kolev | 11.07.2007 at 5:40 pm

Martin, it seems that as a person you’re even more amazing than as a developer - you don’t want our money! :-)

  • 27 jj | 11.07.2007 at 5:51 pm

hm, is there a possibility to make scrollbars looks like in notepad?

  • 28 Shawn Oster | 11.07.2007 at 8:22 pm

Any chance of going to more a agile “release early, release often” method after 0.3.1? Even releasing when there is only a single new feature does a lot to keep people feeling connected.

  • 29 Nikolay Kolev | 11.07.2007 at 9:55 pm

@Shawn - I totally agree with you! I personally won’t mind eve using nightly builds. :-)

  • 30 bikoz | 11.07.2007 at 10:04 pm

+1 for “release early, release often”

  • 31 Atomcifbi | 11.07.2007 at 10:18 pm

Cant wait that my Favorite Editor becomes true !!!
I wish i couls help the Team to make this easier :-)

  • 32 hurrycane | 12.07.2007 at 8:11 am

Guys can we can a screenshot of the new release. Just to get us more excited :).

  • 33 Martin Cohen | 12.07.2007 at 11:13 am

Shawn Oster: Yeah, the “release early, release often” was one of main motivation for the refactoring. We are going to do something similar to the nightly builds, and we added a lot of logging and checking, to have more information of bugs you report. Also the code is much more cleaner, so it will help us to fix bugs in shorter time, as well as adding new features, we are prepared for.

hurrycane: As for the screenshot, I’ve made one few days ago, and published it at forums. It shows tabs and word-wrapping features. Please, don’t ask why menu items, status bar items, or anything else is missing in the screenshot: Some features are just disabled in this state, and definitely will reappear in the release version.

Debug Release Screenshot of Intype 0.3.1

There’s more to come after we finish the features. We are preparing some new screencasts to show you how to work with selections and other features.

Atomcifbi: There’s nothing more valuable for us than testing. So if you want to help, just use the Intype and report ANYTHING you find weird or buggy. Also any ideas on features are welcome, so we can discuss them and add to our roadmap.

  • 34 Anonymous coward | 12.07.2007 at 11:50 pm

build the project and let us download it. We don’t care how many bugs there are, or what state it is in… we just want to play with it!!

    PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • 35 Branstrom | 14.07.2007 at 3:39 am

Martin, the wrap guides will be in any color of my choosing, right?

  • 36 Shaun | 18.07.2007 at 8:59 am

Sweet stuff guys, cant wait for it to be released, will be worth the buy i hope :)

  • 37 a intype user | 18.07.2007 at 10:07 am

    I like intype vary much.
If ‘Find’, “Functions list” etc features can be added to Intype, I need not to go to any other editors.
    Thanx

  • 38 koddah | 18.07.2007 at 2:32 pm

No offence but this is the slowest developmen ever… i would really enjoy and buy intype if it’s fully functional and usable but i think it’s almost been a year and no stable and usable release… only blog posts about features and rewritten stuff.. anyway… good luck… back to e

  • 39 Anonymous coward | 18.07.2007 at 3:34 pm

I’m with koddah, this is becoming a bit of a joke.

  • 40 kagedwolf | 18.07.2007 at 11:38 pm

…”this is becoming a bit of a joke”

Um… there’s a lot of people crying about a slow release cycle. I’m just as excited about this app as anyone, but you guys need to chill down and give these guys a break. Sound like this isn’t their day job and they don’t owe us anything.

Still, this is a totally sweet editor. I’d pre-order and buy a shirt. Anything to keep motivation up.

  • 41 Anonymous braveheart | 18.07.2007 at 11:58 pm

cmon guys, be the men, i need that release! :)

  • 42 Nikolay Kolev | 20.07.2007 at 12:04 am

That’s why I suggested pre-order or some early income so they can get motivated and move faster. I might be wrong, but it seems that the e-texteditor team is a team of… one. Not that I like e (I can’t stand its “x-ray vision” selection mode), but lots of people won’t like to wait forever and find one solution or another. At certain point, people lose patience and then it’s hard to attract their attention again.

As many poeple said, probably a way to handle this is to publish nightly releases. Then people will see that things are moving on (outside of the verbal world) and a lot of us will use even pre-alpha stuff and will definitely provide valuable feedback.

You have a great potential, but by moving slow you’re just helping competitors and future copycats to develop and steal your ideas.

  • 43 Xavier | 20.07.2007 at 1:03 am

@Nikolay early income will not help to move faster - I’m just pretty sure they already work like hell! People crying about slow development should have never written any lines of C/C++ in their life! I prefer to wait as time as required to have the best implemented features and UI… this is why we all love intype over e-

  • 44 Nikolay Kolev | 20.07.2007 at 7:56 am

@Xavier: I spent half of my career (20+ years total) coding in assembly and C/C++

  • 45 Hannes | 21.07.2007 at 9:24 pm

koddah, I totally agree with you. :-)

  • 46 Anonymous coward | 23.07.2007 at 12:42 pm

didn’t Panic develop Coda in a year?

  • 47 kritiQ | 23.07.2007 at 7:44 pm

i thik intype is losing focus. for example, they spend time making fancy word wrapping that only 5% (or less) of us care about and basic features like search (i won’t even mention replace) are missing?! what about the scrollbars we’ve waited for so long? how can you start an editor that doesn’t even have what windows 3.1 had a decade ago - MDI (multi-document interface)? even MS-DOS edit has multidoc!!! or at least add a file explorer so people can quickly switch from one file to another! and i hear that 1.0 will be released next year! wow! i have the feeling that next year nobody will remember what intype was. as the guy said, either you run fast or you get eaten by the beast right after you! the rule of the jungle and the world in general is that only the fast survives.

  • 48 Scailay | 23.07.2007 at 9:41 pm

Although I agree with the fact that this is getting so tedious (in january it was said that final version might be released in May or so…).

Anyway, unstable version is supposed to be about to be released (Martin said 3 weeks ago that it may appear in two or three weeks…). I’m eager to try it and be able to say that this was a worthwhile wait :)

  • 49 Mark | 24.07.2007 at 12:43 am

Open your IDE, click build AND UPLOAD THE THING!!!!!

  • 50 Blomqvist | 24.07.2007 at 1:36 am

Some of you does not deserve the next build, I think. Have some patience, please!
I know it’s been I long wait, I’ve waited to. But as for now, it is free, and we’re not in position to demand anything.

Glad to hear there’ll be a new version out by the end of the month. I look forward to tabs and a project manager.

    Good luck!

  • 51 kagedwolf | 24.07.2007 at 4:34 am

Find and replace has to be my biggest road block. Looking forward to that.

  • 52 Martin Cohen | 24.07.2007 at 9:46 pm

The time spent on the refactoring was not only for the word-wrap, but many other features (including search & replace), that will appear in this, and further releases. But I’m just sure, that you will be satisfied with the release, and in few weeks, nobody will remember the delay. :)

Competitors have no clue on our main features, that are about to be implemented. That’s our policy, that we never speak (or write) about specialities and the details of our roadmap. The classic features are published, but that is just a part of our feature list. So I’m not affraid of this. As for the further development, I believe that goal of making development faster, that we have set for this refactoring will help us release often. (I’ve just made multi and rectangle selections in 4 hours, including: creating some videos)

Give Intype few days and save your energy on reporting bugs, and discussion about the new features. :)

  • 53 Anonymous coward | 24.07.2007 at 10:02 pm

    Getting excited…

  • 54 Hurry | 25.07.2007 at 8:09 am

So are you going to launch by the end of this month ( 6 days left) ?
I`m going to a programming contest from the 6th of August and I really need this release. :)

  • 55 Anonymous coward | 27.07.2007 at 6:38 pm

    27. and still no release…:(

  • 56 bikoz | 27.07.2007 at 7:57 pm

Just wait, July has 31 days :-)

  • 57 kagedwolf | 27.07.2007 at 9:09 pm

A lot can get done over a weekend. Especially if it’s cold and snowing… except that it’s not cold and snowing. Lets hope these guys prefer a release to an enjoyable weekend.

  • 58 Scott | 28.07.2007 at 9:27 pm

July may have 31 days, but I leave on the 31st, and I wanted to relearn intype by that time. You can do it intype team!

  • 59 Nikolay Kolev | 28.07.2007 at 10:07 pm

I am pretty sure that 0.3 won’t be released this month; most probably it will happen in mid-August.

  • 60 Mark | 29.07.2007 at 2:57 pm

    Mid August? 2008 right?

  • 61 Martin Cohen | 29.07.2007 at 4:34 pm

We are pretty close to the release, 90% of new features are working. I’ve just finished the search & replace, and moving to the last set of tasks. Those are tasks in which I’m going to plug-back the old features, that we haven’t included in the code yet — mostly editing features, refactored undo system, preference dialog, log window, configuration system, etc.

We probably will slightly (days granularity) miss the end-of-this-month-estimation. But as long as most of the critical tasks is done, we will release.

  • 62 Nikolay Kolev | 29.07.2007 at 5:16 pm

@Martin: as long as it has even just 1 extra feature compared to 0.2, why not release 0.3 “as is”, but on time so people can finally calm down? You can then release the final 0.3 a week/weeks after that.

  • 63 Martin Cohen | 29.07.2007 at 9:14 pm

Nikolay Kolev: The problem is, that it has new features, but some old are still missing. And I don’t think that editor without undo will calm people down. :) But I’ll revise the todo lists and try to get list of critical tasks. Undo is one of them.

  • 64 Woodwater | 31.07.2007 at 8:31 pm

Oh noooooes…it’s the 31st and still no release. :’(

  • 65 Cofyc | 31.07.2007 at 11:09 pm

    Waiting…

  • 66 Arik | 01.08.2007 at 1:46 am

End of the month now … where’s the release? E only has one known developer and they still somehow crank out a release at least every 2 weeks. I realize you rewrote pretty much the entire backend of InType, but this is just annoying.

  • 67 guy on a hill | 01.08.2007 at 5:29 am

Calm down, people. Why are some people so impatient?
Maybe instead some of you should watch the 2-part South Park Episode, where Cartman wants a WII? Now?

  • 68 Toby | 01.08.2007 at 11:47 am

Any news Martin? Will we see something today?

  • 69 kagedwolf | 01.08.2007 at 5:40 pm

@arik - “but this is just annoying”

Dude… seriously… these guys don’t owe you anything. If you don’t like the time line, then go use e! If e is so awesome use it. If e is being developed at your preferred pace, use it. Don’t get annoyed. Don’t get upset. Life is far to short to waste your time being annoyed with things like this.

I’ve tried e and I don’t like it as much as I like intype. There is something elegant about intype that I can’t quite put my finger on. So, I choose to wait. Search are replace will be the balls, but Martin owes us nothing and therefor… patience… patience.

  • 70 Anonymous coward | 05.08.2007 at 9:03 am

  • 72 Anonymous coward | 09.08.2007 at 7:50 pm

Hah, cowards… They locked the other thread in an attempt to thwart the negativity. Martin… How about your just pop in every once in a while and make a comment instead of hiding?

    Rubbish…

  • 73 Anonymous coward | 09.08.2007 at 8:20 pm

    Yeah. Very bad marketing move!

  • 74 Anonymous coward | 09.08.2007 at 8:46 pm

Okay, if anyone is interested in how a company should actually interact with it’s customers, take a look at (http://www.emeditor.com/modules/newbb/viewforum.php?forum=12) and pay attention to the way the developer is interested in gaining input from his users and then solving the problems that arise.

    +1 EmEditor

  • 75 Arlen | 15.08.2007 at 1:43 am

I’d rather the team spend time writing code than answering questions or receiving feedback, no matter how “important” or “smart” the questions may seem. Any time away from development is bad unless it’s time to eat, sleep, and have some fun (for the sake of productivity). God bless ‘em!
