Success: Intype on Linux

posted by Martin Cohen in Miscellaneous | March 18th, 2007 |

First successful run under Wine on Linux. Today, Juraj solved the problem that prevented Intype from running with Wine. The trouble is in Wine’s implementation of usp10.dll (uniscribe lib). After replacing Wine’s usp10.dll with current Windows XP version of the library, Intype works. The screenshot is from Ubuntu-6.10 distribution. However, further testing and debugging is needed to declare Intype fully compatible with Wine. Feel free to post any bugs or questions to our forums.

    What about native version ? :-)

    I’m a developer and I know how difficult is migrate an application to other operating system. Maybe you should write it in other library? GTK+ would be great! :-)

    Greetings!

    Maybe you should focus on new releases rather than making alphas work on Linux :)

    @Sebastjan:
    Maybe they can do what they want…

    This is great news, it’s rare to see developer of commercial apps working on linux compatibility. I think that the Linux community is ready for this :D

    @Sebastjan: I’m with you on this one…hehehe.

    :)

    I also find it’s an excellent idea to try to be linux compatible from ground up… so many application only think about linux compatibility so late in their development cycle that most of them never do the switch as it’s gone far too hard and requires too much work.

    What does it say about speed guys ? Is it much slower then the windows version?

    So where’s the release that accompanies that changelog? :P

    I would love a native Intype running on Linux. I’m ready to buy if it is usable on Debian.
    Anywhere, good luck!

    Yay, great news!

    The Linux version is just a side-effect of the upgrades that were done mainly to create stable UI. For 0.2.2 we working on rewriting some critical parts for moving Intype to the next level. During this refactoring, we are also separating platform-dependent code. In further releases and updates we will be rewriting each single part of the UI to make it platform and framework independent. The Linux platform is in our plans.

    I really like the look of this app and have been watching the dev silently from the sidelines.
    I must add my 2p at this point :)

    I use textmate natively on a mac, and this is the answer to all my dreams on a windows machine. What would really make this shine is if you made a build that would run on such an application like U3 - the portable application suite bundled with Sandisk drives. as a freelancer i constantly have to put up with all kinds of different crappy apps where i go to work, it would make like easier for people like myself if we could simply stick in our usb pens and have your wonderful app launch straight off the USB stick!

    Is anyone aware of the fact that E-text editor is making leaps and bounds over this editor? Anyone? The only thing stopping me from adopting this editor is the fact that development is sloooow! Speed it up for pete-sake!

  • 15 Anonymous coward  | 03.04.2007 at 12:55 pm

    You guys are too slow in the development. Arik: I agree E TextEditor looks far ahead of intype, I can never see them catching on at this rate.

  • 16 hvge  | 04.04.2007 at 4:24 pm

    Arik: Today I have made very hard choice in my life. I’m going to leave my current job in June/July and step into Intype full-time development. I think that it will be appreciable difference against current development speed :) It was really hard dilemma for me, because I work for game development company and I have a great job…

    I can’t wait this editor to be ready! I’ll buy it for sure!

  • 18 Anonymous coward  | 07.04.2007 at 1:25 am

    You guys just complain. Why don’t you move you butts and do something? Nobody has to code for you, sucker!

    hvge: E Editor is crappy. Lots of bugs. Intype is so much better designed. I’ll buy the linux stable version!

    Chalani netahajte drevo do lesa kua. Ja osobne by som za takyto editor ktory by bezal nativne pod linuxom zaplatil trojnasobok ceny, ktoru uvadzate ako buducu orientacnu. Mozno by ste si mali urobit nejaky prieskum.
