I really like how Zend solved split screen feature in the Zend Studio. They call it “clone view”. It allows you to undock splitted part of the document and move it wherever you want. You can split document more than once so you can have more boxes positioned around/upon the main document area.
Sounds like a real windowed MDI basically…
I don’t know, I would be very happy with a splitview mode that is kind of like jEdit’s; that is, just being able to split a view horizontally or vertically as many times as I want. And easily be able to resize them.
Also, I would like some overlay indicators to show me which files are in which splits. Or something like that.
That Zend ‘split view’ looks more like a Picture-in-Picture type thing. That kind of functionality would be traditionally done in Windows MDI applications by tiling the child windows, either Vertically or Horizontally. I’ve found that this is generally pretty sufficient for me, if not ideal.
A Synchronised scrolling option in split views is something I would like to see – it’s very useful – scroll one view and the other scrolls to match.
